On the reducible $M$-ideals in Banach spaces
The object of the investigation is to study reducible $M$-ideals in Banach spaces. It is shown that if the number of $M$-ideals in a Banach space $X$ is $n(<infty)$, then the number of reducible $M$-ideals does not exceed of $frac{(n-2)(n-3)}{2}$. Moreover, given a compact metric space $X$, we obtain a general form of a reducible $M$-ideal in the space $C(X)$ of continuous functions on $X$. The...
متن کاملOn Identifying the Maximal Ideals in Banach Algebras
We consider the problem of identifying the maximal ideals of a Banach algebra S that is contained in a larger Banach algebra B. If S is dense in B in an appropriate sense and if the spectral radii in S and B are the same, then S and B have the same maximal ideals. The result is illustrated by two examples of Banach algebras S in which the density and spectral radius conditions are easily shown ...
متن کاملOn the Existence of Minimal Ideals in a Banach Algebra
Introduction. In this paper we give a sufficient condition that an algebra have a minimal left (or right) ideal. Specifically, we prove that if A is a complex semisimple Banach algebra with the property that the spectrum of every element in A is at most countable, then A has a minimal left ideal. If A is an ^4*-algebra, we prove that A has a minimal left ideal if the spectrum of every self-adjo...
متن کاملApplications of Banach Ideals of Operators
1. Apologies. Since much of the recent work in the Banach space aspects of Functional Analysis, especially the geometry of Banach spaces, could, by a bit of chicanery, be construed as applications of Banach ideals, the title does not indicate a complete survey. This work is surely not exhaustive of the subject matter. Thus, many good papers are totally ignored. This is somewhat compensated for ...
متن کاملThe lattice of closed ideals in the Banach algebra of operators on certain Banach spaces
Very few Banach spaces E are known for which the lattice of closed ideals in the Banach algebra B(E) of all (bounded, linear) operators on E is fully understood. Indeed, up to now the only such Banach spaces are, up to isomorphism, Hilbert spaces and the sequence spaces c0 and `p for 1 6 p < ∞. We add a new member to this family by showing that there are exactly four closed ideals in B(E) for t...
